Australian perspective on Listeria monocytogenes.

Summary

Data on listeriosis has been available and become a notifiable disease since 1991. Two case histories in Western Australia and Tasmania are discussed. The Australian food industry, in particular the dairy industry has increased research into methods of detection, and the implementation of quality systems based on HACCP is becoming more numerous. The main problem areas are fresh soft cheeses and ice cream, and attention has therefore focussed on dairy factories. The regulatory approach to Listeria in foods is discussed and the National Food Authority is considering the introduction of standards for Listeria monocytogenes to the Food Standards Code. A community education programme is also being implemented in some states. G.R.S.
