Summary

The author reports the experience of a supermarket chain in operating all refrigeration requirements over many years using only R22. The experience has led to design improvements. Insulation has been increased on display cases, suction lines and compressor inlets, conventional liquid/suction heat exchangers to be removed and alternative liquid subcooling used, compressor heads to be fan-cooled, liquid injection to suction on low temperature compressors and floating condensing pressure permitted. Lubricating oil returns from separators to a storage vessel, where it cools before metering back to compressors. Plant details are given for a large installation. Current experiments are also indicated using R134a on two small cold stores, one new and one which previously operated with R12. D.W.H.
