CFC substitution by the domestic refrigeration sector in South America.

Author(s) : VODIANITSKAIA P.

Summary

Updated data on the substitution of CFCs in South America are presented. Estimates of refrigerant consumption in the region are presented, showing high consumption values for servicing existing refrigerators. CFC use by the sector increased in the 1992-1996 period, mainly due to the economy stabilization in Brazil. Preferred technology options in the region are HFC-134a as refrigerant, and either HCFC-141b or c-pentane as blowing agent. Existing CFC-based refrigerators will likely be serviced with new or recycled CFC-12, HFC-134a and fluorocarbon blends.
