Controlled-atmosphere storage trials with kiwifruits, prickly pears, and plums.

Summary

The use and effects of controlled atmosphere studied on several species. Kiwifruit can be stored in controlled atmosphere for more than 6 months, however with CO2 concentration higher than 5% the fruit does not soften regularly in the core. A method for measuring core hardness was developed, and the effect of different gas concentrations on hardness was studied. The atmosphere with 8% CO2 and 5% O2 and with ethylene scrubbing showed the highest amount of fruit with core disorder. Other results are given.
