Development of intelligent controlled-atmosphere storage systems for fruit and vegetables: controlled-atmosphere containers.

Author(s) : JANSSENS M. F. M.

Summary

The possibility of shipping red bell peppers by 40-feet controlled-atmosphere containers from the Netherlands to the United States was examined. The first real controlled atmosphere transport (10-day journey) of 10,000 kilograms of palletized bell-peppers was very successful. Average weight loss after transport was 3% and after a further 7 days of retail-storage, 7%. Retail storage conditions were 17 deg C and 75% relative humidity. The amount of perfect peppers was 97% after the transport and 90% after 7 days retail storage.
