Evaluation of potential R-22 substitute refrigerants using fundamental thermodynamic parameters.

Author(s) : BROWN J. S.

Summary

The Peng-Robinson equation of state as implemented in REFPROP 8.0 (Lemmon et al., 2007) is used to determine what the thermodynamic parameter values for R-22 replacements for typical unitary air conditioning applications should be. The performance (COP and volumetric cooling capacity) of R-22 and potential replacements operating in an ideal vapour compression refrigeration cycle for typical unitary air conditioning applications are used as the basis for comparison. In particular, "acceptable" ranges are determined for the three primary thermodynamic parameters which affect performance, namely, critical temperature, ideal gas specific heat at constant pressure, and acentric factor for potential replacement refrigerants.
