Author(s) : RITTER T. J.

Summary

The paper outlines the experiences to-date in the United Kingdom with regard to the adoption of two hydrocarbon blends, namely CARE 30 (blend of R290 and R600a) and CARE 50 (blend of R290 and R170). The properties of these blends are reviewed, both theoretically and experimentally. In addition, results showing the improved performance and energy savings offered by these hydrocarbon blends is presented. The paper also covers the safety aspects associated in relation to the occupancy classes as defined in the British Standard BS/4434/1995. Hydrocarbons can be used, through proper design condiderations, and if adequate procedures and precautions are followed, accompanied by the appropriate level of training.
