Summary
CO2 as a friendly refrigerant is paid more and more attentions in refrigeration field. At low temperature CO2 has a better heat capacity. In order to know the performance of the heat pipe with CO2 as the working fluid, an experimental unit was built. The unit included a refrigeration system with R404A to provide the cooling load, an intercooler to cool down the gas CO2, an evaporator to evaporate the liquid CO2 and a chamber to keep a constant evaporating temperature. The characteristics of experiments with different charges of CO2 were investigated. The charging mass of CO2 included 850, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 and 1500 g in order to produce different height of the liquid CO2. The recorded results included the temperature in the chamber, the temperature difference between CO2 and R404A in the intercooler and the cooling load produced by CO2. The results show that the optimized mass of CO2 is 1100g in the system. When the charging mass of CO2 is smaller, there is not enough CO2 to absorb the heat load of the chamber and to get a low temperature. The decreasing rate of the temperature in the chamber is slower. When the charging mass of CO2 is higher, although the temperature in the chamber is lower, there will be liquid CO2 at the bottom of the evaporator, which increases the resistance of CO2 in the evaporator. A higher resistance needs a higher height of liquid CO2. So the temperature of the chamber is fluctuant with a higher mass of CO2. The temperature difference between CO2 and R404A in the intercooler has little relation with the charging mass of CO2.
