Experimental research on a hydrocarbon refrigerant used in air conditioner.

Summary

Since R22 will soon be phased out due to its ozone depleting potential and global warming potential, research on the corresponding alternative refrigerants have been performed world-wide by many researchers. Among those alternative refrigerants of R22, a new hydrocarbon refrigerant named HC-22a was recently introduced to air-conditioning engineers. In order to compare the performances of HC-22a and R22, experiments were carried out on a small-scale air conditioner to investigate the operating characteristics. The experiment results indicated that compared with R22, at the same evaporation condition, the charge volume of refrigerant, condenser pressure and power consumption of compressor could decrease 40-50%, 6.96-17.9% and 10.98-14.14%, respectively, while the COP could increase 17.34%. It was found that a better performance of air conditioners could be achieved if R22 was replaced by HC-22a.
