Summary
A numerical and experimental study of the J-T (Joule-Thomson) refrigerator with a new mixture of refrigerants between -70 and -140 °C is described. The refrigerator is based on the hermetic single stage compressor (Danfoss SC 10CL) refilled with mixtures of refrigerants instead of the traditional R22. For the first step, mixtures R22-R14 and R22-R14-R23 of different compositions were tested. A comparison between theoretical and experimental data was carried out. Semi-hermetic contours in existing freezers, which usually assume the two-stage compressor and a mixture of refrigerants, may have limits in lifetime because refrigerant leaks decrease refrigeration capacity. The hermetic installation is more reliable, ecologically safe, compact and economical. Moreover, its power consumption is lower because a low-pressure cycle is used. The designed J-T refrigerator may be applied for medical and biological purposes.
