Summary

Effects of freezing for 2 or 12 hours at -6 deg C on the activities of five enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism were studied in the freeze tolerant marine mussel Geukensia demissus. Freezing reduced the percentage of pyruvate dehydrogenase in the active "a" form in all four tissues and reduced the pyruvate kinase activity ratio at subsaturating versus saturating phosphoenolpyruvate concentrations in three tissues; both results indicate stable modifications of the enzymes in the frozen state. Glycogen phosphorylase and glycogen synthetase were also modified in mantle and hepatopancreas. In all cases, the mechanism of change appeared to be reversible protein phosphorylation, showing that freezing coordinated the suppression of multiple enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism from both mitochondrial and cytosolic compartments.
