Future R717-compressors/refrigeration components and their fields of application.

Type of article: Article
Summary
As R717 has zero ozone depletion and global warming potential, its use as a refrigerant should be expanded. Compared to R12 and R22, the COP is better under almost all conditions. Disadvantages of toxicity, flammability and high discharge temperature can be limited by good design and are outweighed by the advantages. The author describes a new design of screw compressor for a range of 78 to 153 kilowatts and modern methods of oil separation and return. Older reciprocating compressor designs have been improved to allow R717 to be used for heat pump applications. Also the development of plate evaporator and condenser packs have reduced refrigerant charge and added to safety. D.W.H.
