Summary
Refrigeration systems for freezing applications such as a continuous belt, IQF and plate freezers need -32 or -40 °C and gravity feed or pump circulation. Until now, R22, NH3 and HFCs (R404A or R507) have been used. R22 is no longer used and environmental problems, costs of refrigerant and running costs exclude more and more HFCs. In some cases, the use of NH3 could be limited for local regulation, safety in production areas, etc. The paper evaluates several alternatives called "green solutions", direct or indirect systems and NH3 and CO2. Efficiencies, charges, defrost and cost impacts are compared.
