HFC-236ea: a potential alternative for CFC-114.

Summary

An estimated 2,700 centrifugal chillers using R114 (1,1,2,2-tetrafluorodichloroethane) as refrigerant were in use in the United States in 1986. Of these units, most were of 17 to 23 kilowatts cooling capacity with an average refrigerant charge of 955 kg. R114 chillers ranging in capacity from 1.4 to 4.2 kilowatts are used by the United States Navy to provide chilled water for cooling shipboard equipment and for comfort air conditioning. Air conditioning and refrigeration equipment utilizing R114 appears to be more prevalent in other countries than in the United States. The paper describes a chemical, R236ea (1,1,1,2,3,3-hexafluoropropane), which appears to offer several advantages over other potential R114 alternatives.
