Summary

A detailed thermodynamic analysis of refrigeration cycles with R114, R11, and their replacements for chillers was performed in order to predict the behaviour and performance of several existing and newly synthesized refrigerants in a real system. The refrigerants R11, R114, R123, R134, R236ca, R236cb, R236ea, R236fa, R245ca, R245fa, R254cb, R329cca, R338ccb, and R347ccb, are compared on the basis of their refrigerating capacities, cycle efficiencies, operating pressures, and other important cycles and compressor design parameters. The results support and further develop earlier findings about R245ca and R236ea as strong potential R11 and R114 replacements, respectively. These results were used to plan the experimental investigation of the four refrigerants to be performed on a calorimeter with an oil-free compressor.
