Performance testing of a semi-hermetic compressor with HFC-236ea and CFC-114 at chiller conditions.

Summary

R236a is one of the strongest candidates for a R114 alternative in surface craft and submarine chillers (COP and volumetric capacity closest to those of R114). A preliminary performance evaluation of R236ea at 4.4 deg C evaporating and 40.6 deg C condensing temperatures in an oil-free compressor was performed in mid-1993. Some material compatibility and oil miscibility work has also been performed with R236ea in support of its use as a refrigerant. The paper presents more comprehensive experimental test results for R236ea in a compressor calorimeter using a semi-hermetic compressor. Evaporating temperatures ranged from 1.7 to 12.8 deg C, and condensing temperatures from 40.6 to 65.6 deg C. Polyolester oil was used with the refrigerants. A great number of parameters were evaluated during the tests.
