Summary
EU countries have recently agreed on a new 2030 Framework for climate and energy with an ambitious target for 2030 of a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. The HFO R-1234ze choice as the "4th refrigerant generation" seem to be adopted by several manufacturers for its various advantages, that include an extremely low GWP (Global Warming Potential J < 1 below CO2 GWP, an atmospheric lifetime of only 18 days compared with 14 years for HFC R-134a, thus answering perfectly to the goals set by the EU. The HFO R-1234ze is also non-flammable below 30·C (classified in A2L safety class) and allows an efficiency gain of 3% to 5% for chillers using screw compressors and R-1234ze compared vs R-134a. Furthermore, the manufacturer Carrier is now proposing high temperature water to water heat-pumps that can produce hot water up to 85°C thanks to the combination of the R-13234ze refrigerant technical characteristics as well as a specific heat-pump design.
