Summary

SMALL FISH FREEZINGENTERPRISES BEGAN IN 1935 AND WERE RESUMED IN 1950, BUT A DISTINCT INDUSTRY DID NOT EMERGE UNTIL 1959. THE JAPAN FROZEN FOOD ASSOCIATION (JFFA) WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1969 TO HELP CREATE A COLD CHAIN. THE JFFA INCLUDED BOTH FOOD PROCESSORS AND EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS WHO CREATED A SYSTEM OF SELF INSPECTION LEADING TO JFFA CERTIFIED PLANT. THE ASSOCIATION ALSO CONDUCTS RESEARCH AND SURVEYS. THE ADVENT OF SUPERMARKETS SAW AN UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH IN FROZEN FOOD CONSUMPTION WITHSOME COMPANIES MANUFACTURING ABROAD AND AUGMENTING THIS WITH IMPORTS FROM THE USA, CANADA AND EUROPE TO TOP UP HOME PRODUCTION. THERE IS NOW INCREASING COMPETITION FROM THE CHILLED FOOD SECTOR. G.R.S.
