Summary

More than 3,000 hours of sustained operation were achieved with a refrigerant mixture in which the proportion of R134a was raised gradually to 78%. Cooling capacity increased steadily with the graduated introduction of the refrigerant, while the COP showed a small incremental gain over undiluted R12. This procedure can be recommended for all reciprocating compressor refrigeration systems which use materials and oils which are R134a-compatible, and which have a remaining operating life that does not justify expensive retrofitting.
