Summary

ASERCOM has published guidelines for retrofitting R12 and R502 systems with substitute refrigerants. For systems functioning correctly and with no leakage, it is suggested that a new refrigerant is not immediately necessary. Before a change is made, a series of system checks are suggested. R134a is the only single substance, others are blends. Blends containing R22 are easier to use as oil change is not necessary, but R22 will eventually be unobtainable. Change to R134a or any HFC blends involves a change to an ester based oil and possibly material changes in the system. All pipe joints from the expansion valve through the compressor must be brazed or welded. Attention is given to removing all traces of original oil and system cleaning in general. D.W.H.
