ICELANDIC EXPERIENCE IN STORING FISH IN CHILLED SEAWATER.

Summary

SEVERAL SPECIES OF GUTTED AND UNGUTTED FISH HAVE BEEN TRANSPORTED IN 600 TO 40,000 L CHILLED (SEA) WATER CONTAINERS. TEMPERATURE INSIDE CONTAINERS HAS BEEN FOLLOWED AND THE STORAGE LIFE OF THE FISH TESTED ORGANOLEPTICALLY, CHEMICALLY (TRIMETHYLAMINE) AND BACTERIOLOGICALLY. STORAGE LIFE OF FISH IN ICE-CHILLED SEAWATER IS COMPARABLE TO THAT OF FISH IN ICE, BUT VARIES FROM SPECIES TO SPECIES. A SUITABLE RATIO ICE-WATER-FISH WAS FOUND TO BE 15-15-70.
