Summary

Brief summary of the work of the Food Development and Research Centre (Canada) on the effect of irradiation on food packaging. Three areas of irradiation on packaging are mentioned: without food, manufacture of packaging material and pre-sterilization of empty packaging, with foods, to determine the correct level of irradiation. Investigations on the effect of irradiation doses, 0 to 10 kiloGrays, on permeability (oxygen and CO2) of polyethylene, and the stability of irradiated low density binary polyethylenes are mentioned.
