Summary

As part of international efforts to prevent global warming, Japan has set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In the refrigeration and air conditioning field, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol mandates the gradual reduction of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants with high global warming potential. In this study, layered microchannel heat exchangers (LMHEs) were applied using the low global warming potential refrigerant R454C to achieve a more compact system and reduce the refrigerant charge. The LMHEs were incorporated into the condenser and evaporator of a heat pump system, and system performance was evaluated under conditions of a small refrigerant charge. As a result, the effects of refrigerant charge, heat exchanger performance, and the temperature lift range of supply hot water on the system coefficient of performance (SCOP) were clarified.
