Performance of refrigerated ships carrying New Zealand produce.

Summary

A representative group of 12 refrigerated ships carrying kiwifruit from New Zeland to Europe has been studied in detail. The delivery and return temperature outside the pallets has been measured, as well as the fruit temperature in 8 or 12 pallets in different parts of the ship, during each voyage. Given that kiwifruit transport lasts 5 weeks, it is necessary to carefully control temperature and air distribution to ensure good fruit quality. The authors examine the impact of air velocity, air temperature, and the temperature inside, outside and between the pallets.
