GRAPES OF VERIGO AND MAVRO VARIETIES WERE KEPT THREE MONTHS AT 1 TO 2 DEG C IN 40 X 30 X 10 CM CARTONS IN WHICH 4 G SODIUM METABISULFITE WAS SPREAD BETWEEN SHEETS OF GREASEPROOF PAPER AND THE BOTTOM; THE CARTONS WERE ENCLOSED IN PLASTIC BAGS. DECAY WAS CONSIDERABLY REDUCED, WITH TURGID BERRIES, GREEN STEMS; THE BLEACHING OF BERRIES BY SO2 WAS INSIGNIFICANT AND THE APPEARANCE AND TASTE OF GRAPES WERE RATED EXCELLENT.
