Summary

THESE ARE DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE RESPECTIVE LEVELS OF IONISING RADIATION. THEY ARE 0.05 TO 0.15 KILOGRAY FOR SPROUT INHIBITION AND POSTHARVEST GROWTH, FOR WHICH ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE, SUCH AS MALEIC HYDRAZIDE. TREATMENT OF ASPARAGUS AND MUSHROOMS TO CONTROL POSTHARVEST GROWTH IS UNLIKELY AS CURRENT TREATMENTS ARE SUCCESSFUL. INSECT DISINFESTATION IS CARRIED OUT AT 0.15 TO 0.75 KILOGRAY AND CAN BE EFFECTIVE AT 0.25 KILOGRAY BUT ABOVE THIS LEVEL SOME COMMODITIES ARE DAMAGED. AT 0.25 TO 0.5 KILOGRAY, RIPENING OF SOME TROPICAL FRUIT CAN BE DELAYED BUT ITS USEFULNESS WILL DEPEND ON ECONOMIC FACTORS. THE CONTROL OF POSTHARVEST DISEASES REQUIRES ABOUT 1.75 KILOGRAY. G.R.S.
