Type of article: Article

Summary

THE AUTHOR REVIEWS POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT REFRIGERANTS FOR CFCS USED IN CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS. CHOICE IS RESTRICTED TO FLUOROCARBON DERIVATIVES EITHER IN SINGLE COMPOUNDS OR AS MIXTURES. THE REFRIGERANTS TO BE REPLACED ARE R11, R12, AND R500. THE METHODOLOGY STARTS WITH LISTING ALL REFRIGERANTS WITHIN REASONABLE LIMITS OF BOILING TEMPERATURE. FROM THESE, ALL TOXIC AND INFLAMMABLE REFRIGERANTS ARE REMOVED. WHERE ALREADY EVALUATED, THE EFFECT ON CAPACITY AND EFFICIENCY OF AN EXISTING COMPRESSOR IS QUOTED. A FURTHER NUMBER WHICH MIGHT BE CONSIDERED INCLUDE SOME WITH SLIGHT INFLAMMABILITY. THOSE SELECTED ARE OFFERED FOR FURTHER TESTS.
