Summary

Apple cv. York Imperial fruits were harvested from 8 commercial orchards on 5 dates in 1989 and in 4 dates in 1990 (210 fruits on each occasion). Fruits were stored in 6 different conditions. Flesh firmness at harvest was the best single predictor of poststorage firmness, followed by TSS content and seed colour. When the models were fitted separately to each storage treatment, the contribution of prestorage TSS content was not significant for air-storage treatments, and prediction was better for controlled atmosphere (than air-storage treatments). Date of harvest, ethylene content and starch content were not good predictors of poststorage firmness.
