Summary

R245ca (1,1,2,2,3-pentafluoropropane) is an HFC having very similar thermophysical properties to R11 and R123 (an HCFC and therefore with limited time use). As a drop-in replacement for R11 in a centrifugal chiller, modelling suggests a 3 to 4% loss in energy efficiency may occur, otherwise thermodynamic parameters are similar. In the presence of a polyolester lubricating oil, there is virtually no destructive effect on metals or plastics normally encountered, with the exception of Neoprene. Flammability is limited and toxicity low. Ozone depletion is zero and global warming low. Further tests are needed, but the use potential is optimistic. D.W.H.
