Summary

Based on preliminary tests, R245ca has so far proven to be a good candidate refrigerant to eventually replace R11 or R123. Thermophysical properties of the new compound closely match those of R11 and R123. The flammability behaviour of R245ca however, was found to be quite sensitive to the moisture content of the mixtures as well as to the type of ignition source employed. Toxicity testing has been very limited, but no signs of acute inhalation toxicity were observed at a concentration level of 993 ppm. More extensive toxicity testing will require substantially larger quantities of the refrigerant than have heretofore been available.
