R744 mass transit mobile AC and HP system in bus application.

Summary

refrigerants is an ongoing process for a variety of applications. Carbon dioxide (R-744) with a GWP of 1 is one of the options that have been proposed for use in public transport air conditioning applications (bus and rail). R-744 use as an air conditioning refrigerant is challenged by the low thermodynamic efficiency when operating transcritical due to its low critical point of 31˚C in most of the cooling envelope, limiting the achievable cooling COP. These inherent efficiency penalties in cooling may be offset by its competitive performance in heating operations with an extended operating map. This paper provides an overview of an R-744 heat pump (HP) system for bus applications in heating and cooling operations through both modeling and experimental performance. In addition, energy consumption results are discussed to evaluate the system performance in different climate zones.
