Relationship between water vapour permeance, mass loss and shrivel of "Braeburn" apples.

Summary

Five hundred export quality graded and packed fruit were obtained over several harvests. Water vapour permeance was determined from Fick's first law of diffusion that relates permeance to rate of water loss, internal partial pressure of water vapour, external partial pressure of water vapour and fruit surface area. Relationships between shrivel severity and percentage mass loss, shrivel incidence and water vapour permeance were characterised using non-linear functions. These functions were used to develop a simple model for predicting severity of shrive.
