Nowadays, the use of carbon dioxide as refrigerant had regained a lot of interests as it is a non-toxic and nonflammable natural refrigerant. The focus of this study is the possibility of using CO2 as the refrigerant for the adsorption cooling systems. For this purpose, adsorption uptake of CO2 on highly porous activated carbon of type Maxsorb III have been investigated for temperatures ranging from -18 to 80ºC and for pressure up to 10 MPa. The experimental data were correlated using the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm. The specific cooling effect (SCE) and coefficient of performance (COP) have been estimated for regeneration temperatures ranging from 40 to 100ºC at different evaporating temperatures along with a coolant at 30ºC. For evaporation temperature of 15ºC, the COP increases sharply for regeneration temperatures up to 80ºC. However, the increase in COP is only marginal beyond this temperature. The two-stage adsorption refrigeration cycle allows the system operation at relatively lower regeneration temperatures and the COP of the two-stage cycle is found to be higher than that of the single-stage cycle for these low regeneration temperatures typically between 50 and 77ºC. However, the performance of the single-stage is higher than that of the two-stage cycle for regeneration temperature above 77ºC.
