Summary

THE DORMAVAC HYPOBARIC CONTAINER ISA CHAMBER FITTED WITH PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY CONTROL. NORMAL PRESSURE (0.01-0.1 ATM) IS TOO LOW TO MAINTAIN THE TEMPERATURE OF PRODUCTS WITHIN ALLOWABLE LIMITS BY FORCED AIR CIRCULATION. THUS, COOLED GLYCOL IS USED, CIRCULATING THROUGH DUCTS SURROUNDING THE WALLS. THIS CONTAINER WAS TESTED UNDER STATIC CONDITIONS WITH A FULL LOAD OF MUTTON CARCASSES AT 271 K (-2 DEG C) OVER 40 DAYS UNDER A TOTAL PRESSURE OF 0.006 ATM. CARCASS TEMPERATURE, ORIGINALLY AT 275 K, DECREASED BY 1 K AFTER 2 DAYS, BUT IT BECAME STEADY AFTER 20 DAYS. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WARMEST AND THE COLDEST CARCASSES WAS THEN ONLY 1 K. THE CHANGES IN THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE DO NOT RESULT IN ANY MARKED CHANGE IN CARCASS TEMPERATURE. THIS CONTAINER SEEMS CAPABLE TO MAINTAIN UNIFORM LOW TEMPERATURES, BUT IT IS TOO HEAVY AND ITS COOLING CAPACITY IS LIMITED.
