The paper provides a review of the literature concerning the application of CO₂ as a refrigerant in a modern refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems, starting with the year 1990, during which the revival of the CO₂ refrigeration technology was launched by Prof. Gustav Lorentzen. The paper deals with results of theoretical and experimental investigations concerning various applications of CO₂. Furthermore, the development of components for CO₂ systems is discussed.
