The development of a quasi-azeotropic refrigerant for commercial point-of-sale refrigeration and vehicle air conditioning.
Author(s) : COX N., MAZUR V., COLBOURNE D.
Summary
The lowest evaporating temperature achievable using CO2 (R744) is limited by its freezing temperature (-56.6°C). Temperatures below this limit can be achieved using R744 blends. It would be desirable to design a R744 mixture with a freezing temperature much lower the carbon dioxide triple point. The R744/R41 (fluoromethane) pair produces such a mixture. The objective of this project was to specify and quantify the appropriate proportions that would allow this blend to be employed as a low global warming refrigerant. The R744/R41 blend has particular utility as a refrigerant for commercial point-of-sale refrigeration equipment and vehicle air conditioning equipment. Relative to R744, it has specific advantages such as higher critical temperature and lower triple point. Calculations suggested the cooling COP to be higher than pure R744, which was attributed to the higher critical temperature of the mixture. Patents have been filed and published and global licensees are now being sought.
