Summary

Energy saving, controlled atmosphere storage is currently the principal storage system in China, accounting for approximately a third of the apples stored. This system involves the use of high CO2 concentrations and natural cold in the winter for apples stored in PVC tents or in small packages. Under such a system, cv. Starkrimson can be stored for more than 6 months, but the fruits are damaged by high CO2. Results of 2 years of study showed that at 10-18 deg C, the upper limit for CO2 concentration should be 10-15%.
