Summary

This paper presents a comprehensive comparison analysis of the significance of six selected refrigerants most used for commercial refrigeration, as part of a food retail store building environmental impact throughout its complete life cycle. Thus, a stand-alone, single story supermarket located in Zaragoza, Spain, is studied as a case study. The aim of the case study is to compare the environmental impacts, in terms of kg CO2-eq of the scenarios proposed including direct and indirect emissions. Results show that refrigerant can represent more than 50% of life cycle building’s environmental impact in terms of kgCO2-eq/m2year. In addition, variations on the electricity mix of the country where the food retail store building is located can have significant influence on the final results when the complete buildings´ life cycle is considered.
