Thermodynamic evaluation of five alternative refrigerants in vapour-compression cycles.

Author(s) : KAZACHKI G. S., GAGE C. L.

Summary

The authors suggest a simple analysis of refrigerant thermodynamic validity using a minimum of property data, namely, specific heats of saturated liquid, and saturated and superheated vapour, latent heat of vaporisation, and thermal expansivity. The method involves comparisons of efficiencies compared to Carnot and shows that each fluid should be considered in the cycle which suits it, eg with or without internal heat exchange. The results, applied to R32, R125, R134a, R143a, and R152a show the best alternatives for R12 are R134a and R152A, the former with and the latter without internal heat exchange. For R502, R143a shows most promise. D.W.H.
