A comparison study of the thermal performance of R12 and R134a.

Summary

The findings are based on a total of 88 independent tests using two refrigerants, namely R12 and R134a. The test equipment consists of a 3-ton (10 kilowatts) refrigeration system. The parameters varied in the study are the evaporator and condenser sink temperatures and the amount of refrigerant used in the system. For almost all test conditions the R134a operates with greater COP and cooling capacity. It is shown how the system can operate at a higher pressure ratio with R134a and yet have a greater COP than for the system charged with R12.
