Summary

IN SPITE OF THE RECOVERY OPERATIONS BEING CARRIED OUT, IT IS PROBABLE THAT A GENERAL SHORTAGE OF R12 WILL MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO SERVICE CAR AIR CONDITIONERS IN THE NEXT YEARS. THE DEFINITIVE SOLUTION LIES IN REPLACING R12 WITH ALTERNATIVE FLUIDS: R134A IS REGARDED AS MORE OR LESS A < DROP IN > SUBSTITUTE, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY SAFE FROM THE OZONE POINT OF VIEW AND QUITE ACCEPTABLE WITH RESPECT TO THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT ; NEVERTHELESS IT POSES SOME DIFFICULTIES ASSOCIATED WITH ITS BEHAVIOUR WITH LUBRICANTS AND THE OTHER MATERIALS OF THE REFRIGERATING CIRCUIT. DIFFERENT BLENDS OF REFRIGERANTS ARE THUS BEING TESTED, IN ORDER TO FIND A REPLACEMENT FOR R12 IN EXISTING CIRCUITS, EVEN IF IT DOES HAVE A LOW OZONE DEPLETION POTENTIAL. E. F.
