Alternatives for CFCs and HCFC22 based on CO2.

Author(s) : HESSE U., KRUSE H.

Summary

The authors discuss the use of CO2 as a refrigerant. It may be an alternative for CFCs and HCFCs as a pure fluid, if systems and components are designed for the higher pressure levels of supercritical processes. Additional effects in heat pump application or in mobil air conditioning may compensate the generally lower efficiency of supercritical processes compared to a vapour compression process. With standard components CO2 as a pure fluid is usable only in a narrow temperature range between the triple point temperature and the 2500 kilopascal saturation temperature. The possible range of CO2 application can be extended if it is used together with other fluids in vapour compression solution cycles or in cycles with refrigerant mixtures.
