Summary

Alfalfa seeds are a raw agricultural commodity that may become contaminated with pathogens such as Salmonella or E. coli O157:H7 en route from the farm to the sprouting facility. The results do not reveal a chemical treatment method to eliminate the pathogen from alfalfa sprouts. The authors have demonstrated that currently recommended procedures for sanitizing alfalfa seeds fail to eliminate E. coli O157:H7.
