Summary

Retail market picks up, especially in non-fried prepared foods, as refrigerator and microwave oven ownership increase. Imported vegetables pricier. Despite a worsening malaise in the country, official frozen food consumption there was up 4.2% last year to 2,109 million tons. But prices were soft with yen value of the market up only 3.5% to JPY 841.4 billion. Domestic production rose 4.4% to 1,422,037 tons, but value gained only 2.4% to JPY 754.9 billion. Imported frozen vegetables mostly from the United States were up 3.8% in tonnage but 13.2% in value.
