CFC conversion dilemma: ammonia to return to the sea.
Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
Marine refrigeration has used R12 for many cargo cooling and air-conditioning systems. Some are now being converted to R22, which faces eventual phase out, or to R134a. The air-conditioning of a 20-year-old cargo ship is quoted as an example. However, Lloyd's Register have published new guidelines on ammonia usage, and a number of reefer ships under construction for fruit carriage will be equipped with ammonia cooled brine systems. D.W.H.
