Enhanced condensation of non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures in an annulus with petal-shaped finned tubes.

Summary

Condensation experiments in a horizontal annulus have been done in which a smooth tube, a saw-tooth finned tube and four petal shaped finned tubes were tested and compared. In the experiments R113, R11 and their mixtures were used. The mass velocity at the test section ranged from 15-180 kg/m2s. The condensation heat-transfer coefficients of the mixtures were considerably lower than those of pure fluid. The maximum degradation of measured heat transfer coefficient from the pure R113 value was 23% for the smooth tube, 65% for the saw-tooth finned tube, and 67% for the petal shaped finned tubes, which occured in the composition range of 0.4-0.6 vapour mole fraction of R11. For the condensation of mixtures with R11 mole fractions from 38 to 81%, the petal shaped finned tubes had the highest heat transfer coefficients, which were 1.1 to 2.5 times higher than those of saw-tooth finned tube, and 4.8 to 5.8 times higher than that of the smooth tube.
