127 FROZEN MEAT SAMPLES AND PRECOOKED MEALS WERE TESTED IN PARALLEL FOR THE EVALUATION OF A FPM FOR THE QUANTITATIVE DETECTION OF E. COLI. THE FPM ON LEMEN AGAR HAS BEEN COMPARED WITH: A) THE INDOLE-BASED MEMBRANE METHOD ACCORDING TO HOLBROOK. ANDERSON AND BAIRD PARKER DIRECT PLATE METHOD ; B) THE TRADITIONAL MPN (MOST PROBABLE NUMER) FLUOROGENIC ASSAY WITH LAURYL TRIPTOSE BROTH PLUS MUG (METHYL-UMBELLIFERONE-GLUTAMATE). THE FPM HAS SHOWN AN IMPROVED PRECISION OF E. COLI COUNTS, SHORT ANALYSIS TIME (24 H), EASINESS TO CARRY OUT AND SAVINGS IN COSTS.
