Summary

This paper provides system level simulation results and comparison of the same with the test results of conventional long-haul truck and trailer transport refrigeration units which currently use R-452A refrigerant in the refrigeration system with lower GWP alternate refrigerant R-454A. Previously, simple thermodynamic cycle models have been used to compare the performance of these refrigerants with efficiency-based and physics-based refrigerant agnostic or refrigerant independent models in terms of capacity, COP, and the compressor discharge temperature. These thermodynamic cycle models did not include system effects such as pressure drop and heat transfer in the HXs, system architecture etc. Detailed physics-based system level models help in understanding the challenges associated with deployment of these refrigerants such as higher compressor discharge temperature and to develop efficient control strategies to mitigate them. The detailed system model also provides a good understanding of the need for liquid injection to mitigate the high compressor discharge temperature and impact of the same on the system performance at certain operating conditions. Finally, a comparison of the modeling and experimental results has been performed confirming good agreement. Overall, the paper provides insight towards design improvements that enable the refrigeration system to achieve greater efficiency over the entire application range while reducing the indirect carbon emissions over wide operating conditions.
