Summary

Crew numbers are reduced from 9 to 6 in trawlers fitted with automatic and semi-automatic systems for handling bottom and pelagic fish. Refrigerated or chilled sea water tanks are used to store fish, a mixture of 240 litres ice, 50 litres sea water and 880 litres (800 kg) fish are stored in each 1170 litre tank. A storage life of 7 days is achieved without impairing fish quality. Tank units are filled remotely, and can be discharged from the vessel at a rate of 50 per hour. The only manual operation is gutting or feeding fish into a gutting machine. Some figures are given of physiological tests on fishermen using both these and traditional methods. G.R.S.
