ALTERNATIVES TO CFCS ARE ASSUMED TO BE R123 OR R141B TO REPLACE R11 AND R134A TO REPLACE R12. TAKING CURRENT USAGES OF ENERGY FOR BUILDING HEATING AND COOLING, FOR REFRIGERATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING USING THE BANNED CFCS, THE AUTHORS HAVE CALCULATED ENERGY CHANGES FOR THE USA FOR FOUR ALTERNATIVE SCENARIOS, NEAR DROP-IN SUBSTITUTES, A FALLBACK POSITION, A WORST CASE, AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY ALTERNATIVES. THE LAST INVOLVES HIGHLY EFFECTIVE VACUUM INSULATION NOT YET IN MANUFACTURE. INCREASES ARE INDICATED OF ABOUT 1/4, 1 1/3 AND 3% RESPECTIVELY FOR THE FIRST THREE, AND A REDUCTION FOR THE FOURTH.
